V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (Karazin University), with its more than 200 years history, is one of the oldest and biggest universities in Eastern Europe. It is recognized to play a key role in the development of Kharkiv (Kharkov) into a million-plus city and to contribute a lot to the development of the Ukrainian education and science.

The University was founded in 1804. It has graduated about 150 000 Ukrainian students and more than 20 000 international students (studying Medicine, MD, MBBBS) from different countries (Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, India, Israel, Jamaica, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Maldives, Italy, New Zeeland, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, USA). Over the history Karazin University has greatly contributed to developing Ukrainian education and science as well as international activities in Kharkiv (namely to study Medicine for international students).

The University is one of the initiators of Magna Charta Universitatum (Bologna, 1988), the member of the International Association of Universities and the European University Association, the associated member of the European Nuclear Education Network, the co-founder of the Eurasian Universities Association and Association of Russian and Ukrainian Higher-Education Institutions-partners.

Foundation

Founded in 1804, V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University started to train international students in 1948. Since then the University has graduated about 5,000 students from Europe, Asia, and America. In 1961 one Preparatory Course for international students has been established at the University being one of the first courses existing in Ukraine. Since then, over 12,000 international students have passed language training at the University.

  • The first famous documentary mention of the idea to found a university in Kharkiv — V. N. Karazin’s letter to Vasiliy Fotiev, Kharkiv priest.

    In the next year the special legal act is passed on the foundations of the new education system of the Russian Empire “Tentative Rules of Popular Education” stipulating of the Government’s intention to found a new university in Kharkiv.

  • The University opens the surgical and therapeutical clinics, and the Amatauer Theater.

  • The University Academic Board turns to the Ministry of Education with a request to resume the practice of inviting foreign specialists (from the Austrian Empire) to fill vacancies at the University.

  • Professor I. Dorn revives Eastern Studies at the University.

  • The new Charter of the University is adopted changing the structure of the academic and research process: three schools (School of Philosophy, School of Law and School of Medicine) supersede four divisions.

    In 1838 year the University founds an institution of electrotherapy. The Department of Veterinary Science becomes a separate veterinary college, subsequently evolving into a separate institute.

    The University creates a Committee for ordering the library holdings and compiling a printed systematized catalogue; founds the Medical Society.

    The University creates a society of experimental sciences bringing together specialists in chemistry, physics, physiology, and medicine.

    In the next year the University establishes a society of medical, physical and chemistry sciences.

    Scholars and scientists of Kharkiv Imperial University initiate the opening of the Public Library (nowadays V. H. Korolenko Library).

    The medical serves as the basis for creating a society of scientific medicine and hygiene. The physics and chemistry section is transformed into the Society of Physical and Chemical Sciences.

    The University founds a law society.

    The University adopts the “Tentative Regulations for Organization of Student Institutions” allowing to create various student organizations by the decision of the educational institution administration.

    The University erects a building with rooms and labs for chemistry students, constructs several buildings for clinics where students of the School of Medicine undergo practical training.

    The University organizes the Museum of Darwinism and Genetics, which is the second large such museum in the Soviet Union; it introduces a one-time personal exhibition scholarship to mark the 135th anniversary of the University, opens a city auditorium.

    The University Academic Board adopts the decision to introduce a multi-step system of specialists’ training (Bachelor’s, Specialist’s, Master’s degrees) at eight schools. However, the decision is postponed.

    The University opens the Ukrainian-Indian Academic Center and the Ukrainian-African Academic Center.

    The University is among the TOP-500 universities of the world by the QS World University Rankings.

International admissions

International students are among the main goals of international activities at the University. Annually more than 500 international students get admission to study MBBS (MD, General Medicine) at V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Admissions are opened for applications from March to October each year. International applicants are called to send their documents by email.

The academic year starts in September with 2 semester and summer/winter holidays.

Faculties

There is great variety of faculties at the University with the following majors: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Ecology, Computer Science, Radio-Physics, Medicine, Mechanics & Mathematics, Economics, History, International Economics & Tourism, Psychology, Sociology, Philology, Philosophy, Law Science.

English medium offered for International Students has been designed specifically to study General Medicine (MBBS, MD).

The course length is 6 years, with the degree awarded MD (MBBS, Bachelor in General Medicine)

Medical Faculty (General Medicine, MD) has 6 years structure and taught in English Medium for international students. Academic year for MBBS starts in September and remain opened for registering till the end of October with 2 semesters and summer/winter holidays. International students enjoy high quality studies with professional lecturers and practical training in municipal hospitals. The degree obtained in V.N. Karazin National University is globally recognized and internationally accredited world-wide.
Preparatory Course Preparatory Course is a one year language course for those international students who wish to learn Russian language and get education in Russian Medium after passing Preparatory Course. The Course is opened for registration till April, and it is also a good option for those students who arrived late for admission in the 1st course of the main studies. Here in Preparatory Course students get basic knowledge and language skills which makes them well prepared before starting the main course.

How do I apply for admission as international applicant?
International applicant, should first of all send his/her documents by email for assessment.
How do I know I’ve got admission?
Official admission confirmation signed and stamped by the University will be sent to the approved applicant
How to get the invitation for study?
Once admission has been confirmed for the applicant, the next step is to get original invitation letter delivered to home address. For more details please contact International Admissions Office – info@knu.kharkov.ua
How do I get my student visa?
Once the applicant received his/her Invitation letter, he/she should apply to the Embassy of Ukraine. For visa assistance and guidance.
How do I arrive and transfer from the airport?
The person authorized by the University will be waiting for the student at the airport with guaranteed soft landing and transfer to Kharkiv and immediate shifting to University hostel.
Is there entrance examination in order to be admitted to Ukrainian University? Is TOEFL / IELTS requested?
Once the admission confirmation letter has been issued for an applicant, there is no additional examination requested on arrival
What may become a reason for expulsion of international student?
The University has the right for expulsion in case of academic or financial debt of the student.
What is Preparatory Course? What is it for?
Preparatory Course is a one year language course, where students may get ready before starting the main studies (MBBS, MD, General Medicine), get language skills and study some basic subjects. Preparatory Course is a good option for those applicant who arrived late for registering, as the admissions for Preparatory course are opened round a year. Admission procedure for Preparatory Course is the same as for the main studies.
Is there a hostel near by the University, and how should I apply for a room ?
There are few hostels at the University campus, whilst a seat is guaranteed for each and every applicant, automatically, once admission has been confirmed. All the international students are free to choose the type of room (single, double or triple room).
Does the university provide accommodation and food?
The University offers different types of room (i.e. separate floors for boys and girls), and there are national canteens for the students (i.e. Indian Café located just near the hostel)
How is safety and living standards in Ukraine?
Ukraine is a peaceful and beautiful city, a nice place for life and study. Kharkiv is itself academic city, where 30% of international students are studying (comparing to all the international students studying in Ukraine).
What are monthly expenditures for student type living in Ukraine?
In general students do not spend more than 150 USD per months.
What is the spoken language in Ukraine
Generally spoken language is Russian, but all Ukrainians speak English too.
